Muslin fabric (also known as Calico) is a cheap, versatile, finely woven cotton fabric that's used for numerous purposes.

Used extensively as a theater fabric, muslin cloth is used as a background fabric for sets and stage. Muslin fabric is also easily painted and can take on a translucent quality, so makes an excellent base fabric for props and other scenic elements.

Photographers use painted muslins as a backdrop for portraits, while tailors and seamstresses use muslin fabrics in the production of test garments.
